    Soon Y Warren
    4-Day Still Life Watercolor Workshop
    Apr 11-14, 2016

    Restricted Registration will open Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 10 am.

    The Baltimore Watercolor Society is pleased and excited to host Soon Young Warren, AWS, NWS, in a four-day watercolor workshop where she will introduce BWS watercolorists to her painting style and techniques.  The workshop will begin Monday, April 11, 2016 and end Thursday, April 14, 2016 at the Hawthorn Center in Columbia, MD.

    WORKSHOP FORMAT

    Soon will lead the class through two water-color painting projects over the four days, as described below:

    Watercolor Group Studio Exercise #1

    The class will learn how to create an image of a cut crystal bowl in watercolor in a step-by-step process. To speed up the class exercise, Soon will provide a reference photo and drawing for the group exercise.

    Following a painting demonstration, workshop participants will do their own painting in order to fully understand the process. While concentrating on technique, the concept of color theory, composition, and color values will be incorporated into the workshop.

    Watercolor Group Studio Exercise #2

    To help students to loosen up, Soon will demonstrate her pouring process by helping students paint an animal from a photo of their choosing, or a cat from a photo that Soon will provide for practice.

    From these two painting projects, workshop participants will learn:

    • Glazing and washing techniques to create a luminous under painting;
    • How to utilize light and dark values in order to capture the sparkle of glass;
    • How to approach a painting;
    • How to incorporate the concept of color theory and color relationships into a painting;

    Discussion and critiques will follow during workshop session.

    In addition to the group exercise, participants are encouraged to bring current pieces to paint along with reference photos. To make the most of instructional time, prepare the drawings before the workshop.

    To read about the process of how to paint this same crystal bowl before the workshop, read the step-by-step painting process in Soon's second book, “Painting Vibrant Watercolor- discover the magic of light, color and contrast.”  You can purchase the book from Amazon or from North Light Books. The Art of Business
    with
     April Rimpo
    Saturday,April 23 2016
    from 10 AM to 4:00 PM

    April Rimpo is a full time artist who has spent the last several years learning about marketing art. Previously she had discovered that trying to build her art business without having a set of goals she wanted to achieve led her down some paths that turned out to be a waste of time. In this interactive program April will try to help you focus on your art business goals (e.g., accepted in exhibits, more sales, gallery representation, greater national exposure, being published in an art magazine or book), and find a short cut to success.  April will provide examples of activities you can do that might get you to your goal faster. Did you ever find yourself losing track of where your art is on exhibit and when you need to pick it up or deliver it? April will also provide examples of record keeping options.

    In addition to discussing your art goals, we’ll talk about the amount of time you have to work on them. Balancing life, art production, and these goals is important. April will provide ideas to help you set priorities so your art business tasks don’t always get lost.

    Since more exposure of your art and selling more art are often popular goals we’ll explore different types of art exposure and which might be right for you. April will share her bio, artists statement, and portfolio as examples of the materials you will want when approaching galleries. In addition we’ll discuss the importance of understanding your buyers and what is selling.  Once you understand this it will help you target the right venues for you.

    Although marketing is a scary word for most of us, the benefits of online marketing, including newsletters, blogs, and social media to help you achieve your goals is important to understand. April will provide examples to demystify what to write about. We’ll talk again about the amount of time you want to spend on marketing to help you decide what, if any, of the options are right for you.

    Participation by all will make this program better and allow April to tailor the course to best fit your needs.   April will ask everyone to offer ideas, during a “group brain storming exercise”, on possible art goals, which she will capture in a list. This list will become a core to our discussion. You’ll be asked to identify your top one or two goals from the list and then April will share methods to tailor your goals and develop a list of tasks you might do to achieve these goals.

    April will provide several hand-outs with examples including:  tracking sheets for painting inventory, business records, gallery research, bio, artist statement, and her portfolio.

    You can learn more about April at her website, blog, Facebook Art page, and Online Store

    4-Day Workshop - The Landscape in Watercolor
    June 7-10, 2016
    Restricted Registration will open Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 10 am.

    The Baltimore Watercolor Society is pleased and excited to host acclaimed watercolorist, Joyce Hicks, AWS, in a four-day watercolor workshop where she will introduce BWS watercolorists to her painting style and techniques.  The workshop will begin Tuesday, June 7 and continue through Friday, June 10, 2016 at the Hawthorn Center in Columbia, MD.

    Joyce will be the juror for the 2016 Mid-Atlantic Watercolor Exhibition, and will also present an evening program (to be announced later) during her week in Maryland.

    WORKSHOP FORMAT

    Joyce will introduce her students to her unique style and her process of painting the landscape in watercolor. The workshop emphasis is on techniques and strategies for transforming ordinary scenes into extraordinary ones with watercolor; scenes that reach out and connect with viewers.

    Joyce teaches simple easy to learn methods that appeal to beginners as well as seasoned artists looking for renewed inspiration and insights into new ways of thinking. Students learn from clear explanations about the reasoning behind artistic decisions and visually from step-by-step demonstrations. Students learn to distill and process scenes from inspiration to finished work of art becoming more comfortable with the medium in the process.

    Joyce says, "Once technical aspects of watercolor have been mastered you too will begin to paint from that sacred place that resides within each of us. I bring my passion and love for teaching to inspire and motivate in a fun, fast-paced workshop."

     Following are a few of the topics covered in the workshop:

    • atmospheric perspective in the landscape
    • simplifying and streamlining scenes
    • working toward personal style by developing a visual language
    • steps for building strong compositions
    • painting “relationships” instead of “things”
    • seven important design principles for creating exciting paintings
    • working with photographs, sketch books and color studies
    • planning strategies that will allow you to paint spontaneously and with confidence

    The class will include a combination of lectures and painting demonstrations by Joyce, plus student painting time with coaching and critique by the instructor.

    SUPPLIES LIST AND PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS

    A supplies list and instructions for preparing for this workshop will be sent to those registering about one month in advance of the workshop.

    ABOUT JOYCE HICKS

    Joyce Hicks lives in Texas and is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, a past-president of the Central Texas Watercolor Society and a member of several other art societies.  She is a recognized jurist, workshop instructor and award-winning painter.  The following is Joyce's artist statement from her website:

    I’ve always been able to see places and things in an idealistic way, but it wasn’t until I discovered painting that I was able to express and interpret this personal view. My art is not always a true rendition of what is actually there but how I wish it could be. If the old white homestead is a bit neglected, then I will just capture it in sunlight to discover its real beauty. If there is only one withered rose on the old trellis then why not one hundred in full bloom?

    Frequent travel allows me to see and define what my heart is drawn to. Not in the grand or extraordinary but in simple unassuming beauty. Painting gives me the opportunity to unite visual images with a montage of personal memories stored over a life time. In an attempt to translate my feelings for a subject I use interesting brush strokes, strong contrasts, sunlight and shadow in colors both soft and bold. These elements combine in a personal way providing a visual invitation to tempt others into my world.

    My purpose is to uplift the human spirit and my hope is that my paintings will inspire others to join me as I continue my artistic journey. I enjoy entering competitions, teaching workshops and presenting painting demonstrations.

    4-Day Workshop - Sketchbook to Studio: Interpreting the Urban and Rural Landscapes:
    October 25-28, 2016
    Restricted Registration - will open Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 10 am.

    The Baltimore Watercolor Society is excited to feature watercolor landscape artist, Iain Stewart, NWS, in a four-day watercolor workshop where he will introduce BWS watercolorists to his approach to interpreting the urban and rural landscapes.  The workshop will begin Tuesday, October 25, 2016 and continue through Friday, October 28, 2016 at the Hawthorn Center in Columbia, MD.

    WORKSHOP FORMAT

    Explore the medium of watercolor in a relaxing and creative environment. Award winning watercolorist, Iain Stewart’s, sole focus will be bringing your creativity to light and aiding you in dispelling the myths of the difficulties of painting in this wonderful medium. Given the right encouragement and understanding of the basic fundamentals, watercolor is a creative outlet unmatched in its ease of use, cost of materials, and pure enjoyment of artistic expression.

    Through demonstration, careful critique, and lessons learned over a long painting career Iain will help you understand how to prepare for and anticipate the challenges that painting in watercolor presents. By guiding you through his process which relies on simplification of subject through sketching, graphite value studies, and preliminary color studies Iain will demonstrate how to create a road map, that if followed, will greatly improve your painting. This workshop is intended to provide you with an understanding of how to paint in watercolor while avoiding common mistakes by creating a step by step road map that you can use for painting any subject.

    Students will follow Iain in a group demonstration. Painters of more experience can work from their own photographs with individual guidance. The class setting is very relaxed and accommodating to all.

    “It is my absolute joy to watch students make those tiny breakthroughs that begin to build confidence and leave a lasting desire to continue their exploration. Far too often the background exploration of a painting is left undone leaving the the “soul” of the image a mystery. It is my hope that by understanding and repeating my process you will find that your watercolors begin to follow a plan rather than a reaction to unanticipated results. Watercolor, if treated correctly, can be much easier than it’s reputation might suggest. I can think of no other form of expression that I delight in more than painting and it is my sincere wish to share that pleasure with others.”
