Gallery Commission is 40% of sales price*

*In some instances, the gallery encourages sales by offering a 10% discount to the buyer. This 10 percent reduction is split 5% from both the registrant and the gallery. Please price paintings with this in mind.

We are pleased to have artist Barb Kiwak conduct this watercolor Plein air workshop.

Her instruction method is hands on. She will give composition advice, color advice and demo at each of the sites.

She will encourage thumbnail sketches before beginning the finished painting. She would like to encourage group critique's near the end of each day.

All student level are welcome, from beginning to advanced.

On April 20, Barb will conduct a workshop focusing on plein air painting in watercolor at the Brighton Dam Azalea Garden, located at 2 Brighton Dam Rd, Brookeville, MD 20833. Brighton Dam Azalea Garden is a premier spring destination featuring over 22,000 brilliant azalea bushes across 5 acres. Known for its vibrant, color-blocked, and mature, tree-sized blooms, this free, non-commercialized spot offers scenic views of the Triadelphia Reservoir, a, charming gazebo, and peaceful walking trails.

On April 21, we will visit Jerusalem Mills at 2813 Jerusalem Road, Kingsville, MD 21087. Jerusalem Mills is full of History and architecture. It is special as one of Maryland's oldest and most intact 18th-century, industrial mill villages. Located in Gunpowder Falls State Park, this National Register site features restored historic buildings, the Jericho Covered Bridge, and immersive living history, including Revolutionary War-era gunstock production.

On April 22, we will visit Downtown Ellicott City. Exact location to start our session to be decided in few days. Ellicott city is again a historic charm in Howard county with a vibrant, main street packed with unique boutiques, antique shops, art galleries, and diverse dining options.

Barb Kiwak

Biography:

After graduating from MICA in the late eighties with a BFA in Visual Communications, Barb began her career in illustration. She worked for many publications including, Good Housekeeping, Reader's Digest, Highlights for Children and many more. In the late nineties, she decided to branch out into fine art. She was featured in many shows across the United States with her oil paintings and sculpture. She is represented by the Berkeley Gallery in Virgina and currently teaches at the Zoll Studio of Fine Art. To see a complete viewing of her work, please visit http://www.barbkiwak.com

Recommended Materials:

A pencil, eraser, a full palette of colors, an assortment of brushes, water for paint and watercolor paper. A board/easel, a chair, paper towels and a bag to put trash in.

In addition, bring plenty of water to drink and a packed lunch/snacks.

A plein air umbrella is optional.

Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunscreen, your lunch and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow artists!

WORKSHOP PRICE:

The price for the workshop is $120 for BWS members (Signature Artists and Associates) and $150 for non-BWS members.
The class size is limited to 22 people, and the workshop cannot be split with another person.

PAYMENTS:

Please pay online if possible. The payment system allows the use of Credit Cards. Otherwise, checks should be made out to Baltimore Watercolor Society. Please enter the name of the workshop on your check. You will receive another email with the instructions for the check payment, if online payment is not opted during checkout process. WAITING LIST:

BWS maintains a workshop waiting list. When openings occur, BWS fills the openings from the waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis.

BWS adds names to the waiting list according to the date and time.

You can join the waiting list if a workshop is filled. There are often openings so it is worth doing if you are interested in the class.

You can't join a waiting list before registration opens.

Waiting List registrants - Do not send payment until you are informed of an opening and have been sent an invoice. Any check sent before you have been informed you have a spot will be destroyed.

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS:

BWS makes decisions and incurs fixed costs based on the number of initial registrants. Cancellations can affect these costs even if there is a waiting list. In addition, cancellations incur processing fees and other costs paid by BWS as well as requiring extra time and organizational effort. Refunds for extenuating circumstances are at the discretion of the event coordinator.

From registration date to 60 days prior to the event = 90% refund

59 days to 21days prior = 75% refund

20 days to 8 days prior = 50% refund

7 days or fewer = no refund

In the event of inclement weather, participants will be notified by email of any changes. If BWS cancels the workshop, then all paid registrants will receive a full pro-rata refund for those days that were cancelled.

The Frick is known for its distinguished Old Master paintings and outstanding examples of European sculpture and decorative arts. The collection includes paintings by Vermeer, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Monet, Degas, Whistler, as well as sculptures, furniture, and porcelain. The building was recently reopened after a five year comprehensive renovation.NOTE: Museum fees are not included in the bus trip fee.

The Guggenheim collects, preserves, and interprets modern and contemporary art.

Guests are paid for by the participant making the registration. You may invite up to two guests, 13 years or older. If bringing a minor, you are responsible to escort them at all times. Unfortunately, guests younger than 13 are not permitted on the bus.

The bus will arrive at The Frick Collection at approximately 11:30 am. TIMED TICKETS ARE REQUIRED IF YOU ARE NOT A MEMBERS OF THE FRICK. GO TO FRICK.ORG FOR YOUR PURCHASE.

After visiting the Guggenheim or the Frick, have lunch in their cafes, a nearby restaurant, or one of the food trucks on 5th Avenue. Please be sure to come back to the Frick before the bus leaves a 2:00 pm, or 1:45 pm at the Guggenheim or Neue Gallerie.

2:00 pm promptly the bus departs from The Frick to the Salmagundi Club to view the American Watercolor Society Exhibit, arriving at approximately 2:30 pm.

4:45 pm we will board the bus which will be waiting in front of the Salmagundi Club for the return to Maryland.

5:00 pm prompt departure from the Salmagundi Club.

Important: If you are not on the bus by 5:00 pm at the Salmagundi, we will assume that you have made other plans to return to Maryland. You MUST INFORM the Trip Organizer if you will NOT be returning to Baltimore on our bus. This is critical!

Program Description

Discover the delicate beauty of flowers through the vibrant and expressive medium of watercolor. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn essential techniques for painting florals, including wet-on-wet, layering transparent washes, and capturing petal and leaf shapes with values and chroma.

Perfect for beginners and intermediate artists alike, this class will guide you step-by-step. We'll explore a variety of flowers such as roses, peonies, wildflowers, and greenery, with an emphasis on color harmony and composition.

By the end of the lesson, you’ll have your own finished floral watercolor painting and the confidence to continue painting your own botanical creations.

What you’ll learn:

Basic watercolor techniques (wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, glazing, lifting, layering)

How to mix and control colors

How to paint various floral shapes and arrangements

Tips for creating depth and movement in your composition

Supplies:

Watercolor paper, watercolor paints, brushes (round sizes recommended), pencil, eraser, water container, and paper towel.

Preparation Instructions:

About 30 days before the event, you will receive images from BWS which Karen will use for the class. The base drawing must be completed on the watercolor paper before the workshop begins.

BIOGRAPHY

Karen Frattali, BWS, PWCS, GWS, WSA, LWS, KWS

Karen Frattali has been an artist and teacher in the area for the several decades. In addition to working locally, Karen teaches around the Middle Atlantic states for other art groups, competes in national competitions and is a past officer of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society. She has achieved signature status in several of the country’s watercolor organizations. A complete biography appears on her website: www.karenfrattali.com. Over the years she has been honored to participate in the juried events of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, Baltimore Watercolor Society, Louisiana Watercolor Society, Lancaster County Nat’l Juried Show, Berks Art Alliance Nat’l Juried Show, Watercolor Society of Alabama, Georgia Watercolor Society, Kentucky Watercolor Society and others.

During her tenure as art teacher, she has guided many artists to become accomplished painters themselves. She maintains current weekly classes in Kennett and Strasburg PA. She is represented by Strode’s Mill Gallery of West Chester.

Program Description

Drawing from a lifetime of painting and more than 25 years of teaching at universities and museums, Richard shares his most essential lessons about color.

In this workshop, participants will learn:

A more intuitive, artist-friendly way to understand and control color
How to train your eye to see the quiet colors hiding in plain sight
How to paint with a conductor’s mindset for stronger, more cohesive results

My suggestion is to stay away from inexpensive brands or any student-grade paper

The Saunders Waterford and Arches papers can be purchased from Jackson’s Art / Fabriano can be purchased at most art supply stores

Mixed Violet – a mixture of two watercolors: Cobalt Blue – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour and Quinacridone Red – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour (I mix 2 parts Cobalt Blue to 1 part Quinacridone Red)

Note: the mixed violet I use will not produce the most intense violet possible. I have found that a mixture of Ultramarine Light and Quinacridone Magenta makes the most intense violet. I prefer my mixed violet in most cases because it mixes beautifully with other colors without dominating the mixtures. 95% of the time this mixed violet is all I need. If I need a more intense violet, I mix together Ultramarine Light and Quinacridone Magenta.

Paper towels (I use Viva Select-a-Size)

Artist tape

Wax resist – you can use a wax stick, or even a wax candle

Preparation Instructions:

About 30 days before the event, you will receive images from BWS which Richard will use for the class. The base drawing must be completed on the watercolor paper before the workshop begins.

BIOGRAPHY

Richard Scott

Richard E Scott is a painter, teacher and writer. He teaches drawing and painting at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California, the Huntington in San Marino, California, and art workshops throughout the U.S. and Europe. For 25 years he has taught at numerous universities including Cal Poly Pomona, UCLA, Art Center, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UNLV.

He has written for various art and design magazines and in 2013 published a compendium on drawing called “Sketching – from Square One to Trafalgar Square.”

$160.00 for BWS members (Signature Artists, Associates, and Students) and

$200.00 for non-BWS members.

The class size is limited to 22 people, and the workshop cannot be split with another person.
