Program Description

Drawing from a lifetime of painting and more than 25 years of teaching at universities and museums, Richard shares his most essential lessons about color.

In this workshop, participants will learn:

A more intuitive, artist-friendly way to understand and control color

How to train your eye to see the quiet colors hiding in plain sight

How to paint with a conductor’s mindset for stronger, more cohesive results

Supplies:

Suggested Gear & Materials

You are welcome to use any drawing and painting gear you like. That said, for those interested, below is a listing of the gear and materials that I will be using in the class.

Click on the links (underlined text) to view items at Amazon, or at Jackson’s Art, (located in the UK, but they ship fast).

Drawing Gear: Pencil

When I draw in graphite, here is my preferred pencil: Blackwing Pencil – Natural

Watercolor Gear:

Watercolor Block

Saunders Waterford Watercolor Block / 16” x 12” (or any size you prefer) / Rough Surface / Regular White Color / 300gm (140lb)

Other good brands are Arches and Fabriano / any size you prefer / Rough or Cold-Press Surface / 300gm (140lb)

My suggestion is to stay away from inexpensive brands or any student-grade paper

The Saunders Waterford and Arches papers can be purchased from Jackson’s Art / Fabriano can be purchased at most art supply stores

Saunders Waterford Block – comes in a variety of sizes

Brushes

I use a variety of flats and rounds / some in sable, others in synthetic / use whatever kinds you like

Brush holder to keep the brushes protected

Palette

I highly recommend this palette:

The Portable Painter Palette is excellent and inexpensive / get the “Classic Plus Kit” (it has extra wells for additional paint colors, if desired) / visit Portable Painter and enter promo code SCOTT during checkout to receive a 10% discount on your order (promo code is case sensitive)

Watercolors

You are welcome to use any colors and brands you like. Here are the colors I use and how I organize them on my Portable Painter Palette (corresponding to the 15 paint wells shown in the photo below).

Middle Row (listed from left to right):

Cadmium Yellow Lemon – Schmincke Horadam Aquarell

Cadmium Yellow Deep – MaimeriBlu

Quinacridone Gold Hue – Schmincke Horadam Aquarell

Cadmium Orange – MaimeriBlu

Transparent Brown – Sennelier L’Aquarelle

Quinacridone Red – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour

Bottom Row (listed from left to right):

Winsor Green (Yellow Shade) – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour

Viridian – MaimeriBlu

Cerulean Blue – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour

Cobalt Blue – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour

Utramarine Light – Sennelier L’Aquarelle

Mixed Violet – a mixture of two watercolors: Cobalt Blue – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour and Quinacridone Red – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour (I mix 2 parts Cobalt Blue to 1 part Quinacridone Red)

Note: the mixed violet I use will not produce the most intense violet possible. I have found that a mixture of Ultramarine Light and Quinacridone Magenta makes the most intense violet. I prefer my mixed violet in most cases because it mixes beautifully with other colors without dominating the mixtures. 95% of the time this mixed violet is all I need. If I need a more intense violet, I mix together Ultramarine Light and Quinacridone Magenta.

Top Row (listed from left to right): (Optional Colors)

Titanium Opaque White – Schmincke Horadam Aquarell
(Middle well is empty – I use this spot for any new colors I’d like to experiment with)

Ivory Black – Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour

All of the paints listed can be purchased online at Jackson’s Art.

Easel

Not required for the class, but nice to have when you paint on location. Below is the one I use. To see a detailed description of how I assembled this easel, click this link.

Other Items : any style or brand is fine

Sponge or Sham-Wow

Small spray bottle (any brand)

Paper towels (I use Viva Select-a-Size)

Artist tape

Wax resist – you can use a wax stick, or even a wax candle

Preparation Instructions:

About 30 days before the event, you will receive images from BWS which Richard will use for the class. The base drawing must be completed on the watercolor paper before the workshop begins.

www.bws.wildapricot.org and go to Public Events > Upcoming Events. If a Member, be sure to login before registering.

Remember that these workshops fill up very quickly. When filled, you can join the waiting list.

Waiting List:

BWS maintains a workshop and program waiting list once the event is filled. If registrants cancel, BWS fills the openings from the waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis. There are often cancellations, so it is worthwhile joining the waiting list.

BWS adds names to the waiting list according to the date and time.

You can't join a waiting list before registration opens.

Waiting List registrants - Do not send payment until you are informed of an opening and have been sent an invoice. Any check sent before you have been informed you have a spot will be destroyed.

Cancellations and Refunds:

BWS makes decisions and incurs fixed costs based on the number of initial registrants. Cancellations can affect these costs even if there is a waiting list as people are not always still available. In addition, cancellations incur processing fees and other costs paid by BWS as well as requiring extra time and organizational effort. Refunds for extenuating circumstances are at the discretion of the event coordinator.

From registration date to 60 days prior to the event = 90% refund

59 days to 21days prior = 75% refund

20 days to 8 days prior = 50% refund

7 days or fewer = no refund

Workshop Instructor:

The Baltimore Watercolor Society is excited to feature a workshop with award winning local watercolor artist Stacy Lund Levy.

Stacy Lund Levy AWS, BWS, PWS, PWCS, AWA

WORKSHOP SUBJECT:

Painting an urban landscape can seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. This two day watercolor workshop will focus on simplifying complicated structures into basic shapes. Working with a photo reference we will concentrate on which elements to add or remove to strengthen composition and where added detail will be most impactful. We will experiment with a range of value and color to create atmospheric perspective. Basic perspective will be introduced and photo references will be provided.

RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCE:

All levels (basic knowledge & some previous experiences strongly recommended to benefit from this workshop)

All levels are welcome but students should have an understanding of the watercolor medium.

SUPPLY LIST:

Paints

I prefer Daniel Smith or Winsor & Newton artist grade paints. The colors that I have listed below always live on my palette and are standard for most of my paintings. I will not be using them all. I put a star next to the ones that I will be using the most for this workshop. You do not have to buy every color on this list! Feel free to use your own palette.

*Alizarin Crimson permanent

Pyrol Scarlet

Vermillion

*Quinacridone gold

Aureolin

Hookers Green

Antwerp Blue

*Ultramarine Blue

*Peacock Blue

*Indigo

Winsor Blue green shade

*Mineral Violet

*Indanthrone Blue

*Burnt Sienna

*Burnt Umber

*Cerulean Blue

*Cobalt Blue

*Yellow ochre

Opera Pink

Quinacridone Coral

Brushes

Various sizes (again, whatever you are comfortable with).

I will be using

- a mop OR 1” flat for backgrounds, you do not need both.

- combination of #6, 8, 10, 12, 14 rounds. I prefer Escoda Perla and KINGART Original Gold 9020 ( they are a replacement for Loew Cornell Ultra Round brushes that are no longer made).

- Rigger or fine pointed brush for details as needed.

- Hake brush 2" or larger

Paper

Feel free to use whatever brand of good quality paper that you are comfortable on which to transfer your reference drawings. Also bring several sheets of scrap paper to practice the various exercises. I recommend either Arches, Fabriano, or Saunders Waterford. I use Arches 300 lb.

I recommend painting on a half sheet (22” x 15”), however, size doesn’t matter. Details are easier with a larger piece of paper.

Additional Supplies

Bring the standard watercolor supplies:

water containers

paper towels or small towel

block or board to attach watercolor paper

Pencils

Masking fluid, Pebeo is the brand I use. Make sure it is still fluid, like the consistency of water.

Rubber cement pick up

Art tape (the white one) OR masking tape

Brush for masking fluid

Small container of dish soap (1 Tablespoon is plenty)

12 inch ruler

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

About 30 days before the event, you will receive images from Stacy that she will use for the class. An image of Stacy's line drawing will also be provided to those registered so you may trace the painting we will be working on.

Once you have the images be sure to draw or trace the line drawing on your own paper. Stacy will be working with 1/2 sheet size paper and it is recommended you do the same because painting details is harder on smaller paper.

BIOGRAPHY:

Artist and Baltimore native, Stacy Lund Levy has been creating art in many forms since kindergarten. Combining her artistic talents with her intellectual interest in anatomy and science, she initially worked as a medical illustrator.
Stacy works primarily in watercolor and collage. She is a signature member of the American, Baltimore, National, Pennsylvania and Transparent Watercolor Societies, as well the AWA, American Women Artists.

I love drawing and painting. Once I choose my subject, the creative process is almost scientific. It is very satisfying to me to attempt to transform a 3-D moment in time into a 2-D piece of art.

To me, creating any art is a continuous series of mini puzzles that need solutions. As I am working, I am asking myself a series of questions. What supports the object or being? The weight is centered where? How is it connected? What colors should I use to achieve the feeling that I want to convey? I continually look for “clues” in my subject and work until I am satisfied. If I have answered all the questions and solved all the puzzles, the result is tremendously satisfying for me and hopefully the viewer.

WORKSHOP PRICE:

$190.00 for BWS members (Signature Artists, Associates, and Students) and

$230.00 for non-BWS members.

The class size is limited to 22 people, and the workshop cannot be split with another person.

PAYMENTS:

Please pay online if possible. The payment system allows the use of Credit Cards. Otherwise, checks should be made out to Baltimore Watercolor Society. Please enter the name of the workshop on your check. You will receive another email with the instructions for the check payment, if online payment is not opted during checkout process.

Remember that these workshops fill up very quickly. When filled, you can join the waiting list.

WAITING LIST:

BWS maintains a workshop waiting list. When openings occur, BWS fills the openings from the waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis.

BWS adds names to the waiting list according to the date and time.

You can join the waiting list if a workshop is filled. There are often openings so it is worth doing if you are interested in the class.

Cancellations can affect these costs even if there is a waiting list.

In the event of inclement weather, the workshop will still be held unless the Hawthorn Center is unable to open or the workshop artist is unable to travel. If BWS cancels the workshop, then all paid registrants will receive a full pro-rata refund for those days that were cancelled.

Check this website for changes, updates and new information.

Questions and requests to be added to the waiting list can be directed to Workshop chair by replying to this email.
