The Baltimore Watercolor Society is excited to feature watercolor artist Matthew Bird, NWS, in a four-day watercolor workshop where he will introduce BWS watercolorists to his approach to painting  "chiaroscuro" like the old Masters .  The workshop will begin Tuesday, October 30th and continue through Friday, November 2nd, 2018 at the Hawthorn Center in Columbia, MD.

Painting the Figure in Watercolor

Focusing on the “chiaroscuro” approach of the old masters, which uses strong light and rich shadow to create intense and dramatic paintings, this four day workshop will include daily watercolor demonstrations illustrating Matthew's technique and giving insight into his methods and philosophies. Students will follow along with group demonstrations. Painters with more experience can work from their own photographs with individual guidance, or work from the material provided. The class setting is very relaxed and accommodating to all.

TOPIC WILL INCLUDE

  • Painting the translucency of skin.
  • Handling complex textures such as hair and fabric.
  • Tips on working with a model to create engaging portraits.
  • Special attention will be given to the unique properties of light and shadow, as well as design, value, edges and color.
