The Baltimore Watercolor Society is excited to feature watercolor artist Janet Rogers, in a four-day watercolor workshop where she will introduce BWS watercolorists to her approach to painting figures, portraits and flowers.

All levels are welcome but students should have an understanding of the watercolor medium.

WORKSHOP FORMAT

The dynamic workshop is designed to enable participants of all levels to quickly gain confidence in approaching the portrait and figure in a more spontaneous, intuitive and expressive way.

Demonstrations, class instruction, individual assistance, "show and tell", and a series of "fun" exercises will weave into class painting time. Special emphasis will be on achieving a fresh look of translucent flesh tones in the portrait with unique color changes, which will add to the excitement of capturing the essence of the subject. Many "features" will be covered. All levels will benefit and help is available to those who are new to the portrait and figure. No Fear!!

Students will have an opportunity to work from their photographs or Janet's and also from life models. Janet will also focus on achieving quick gesture paintings from photos and the model - having fun with letting the watercolor form the gestures in a fun and fluid manner.

The goal will be to "see" in new ways, bringing "life" and interpretation to the portrait and the figure, and to discover intuitive color and design.

FOR ONLINE REGISTRATION VISIT:

Artist's Statement:

"I love the qualities of watercolor - its fluid nature. To me, the interaction of artist with the medium is like a dance - full of motion, feeling and expression. I love to watch the painting develop and to discover new color and composition.

As a teacher, I would like to enable students to find their connections with watercolor is new and expressive ways."

‘WATERCOLOR IMPRESSIONS - FLOWERS to FIGURES”

Dear Students:  I look forward to our workshop.  Below is a SUGGESTED list of supplies.  PLEASE DO NOT FEEL YOU HAVE TO HAVE EVERYTHING!! Hopefully you already have supplies that are the same or  comparable.  Please call me for any questions - (386)441-4930 (cell:  386-451-8441) or E-Mail:  janet@watercolorsbyrogers.com.  Website:  www.watercolorsbyrogers.com

WATERCOLOR PAPERS:  I suggest  140lb Coldpressed (prefer Arches Bright White- rougher side for paintings..   It will be helpful to have extra watercolor paper (could be backs of old paintings, etc.) for painting exercises. (but Arches best even for exercises) also Fabriano or Kilimanjaro.  Of course, you will also need a board (I use Champion Art mate approx. 17” x 23” – but even foam board will do -  to support your painting – as I paint on an angle).  We do many paintings, so please bring enough watercolor paper (approx. 2 to 5 paintings per day – can be ½ sheets(I work on ½ sheets) or ¼ sheets if need be).

OTHER PAPERS:  drawing paper will be needed in any portrait or figure workshop.  (I will have extra with me)

PENCILS:  I suggest a #2B pencil for drawing on the watercolor paper, but really love the ebony pencils (or 6B) for drawing exercises (on sketch paper).  A kneaded eraser and pencil sharpener will be handy.

PALETTE: I use various palettes, such as “Jones Palette”,  “Cheap Joe’s ”, , etc. – I also use a Jasper tray (plastic type butcher tray)  to make more “puddles”.  Palettes should have individual wells plus area for mixing (large flat areas).

OTHER STUFF:   Although, I will supply some fresh flowers, feel free to bring some favorites of yours also (for Flower Workshops). Hair dryer(we can share), large container for water (I use a bucket), paper towels (I suggest Bounty).  For figure portion, we will work from photos for the figure portion of the  workshop but may work from a model so bring your camera!.  Please bring photos of people to work from (can be friends, family, someone who interests you or even from magazines – since this is for practice) ones with good lights and darks (shadow shapes).  Ideally shadow shapes should should be more than ½ .   Please see my website for sample). I will also have some photos if you don’t have any you like.

If you would like you can bring a drawing and photo that you might enjoy working from – you can trace the drawing or just draw straight on your watercolor paper.  I will try to have some drawings that you can trace especially for beginners and photos to go with them.

BRUSHES:  I like the following:  KINGART GOLDEN TAKLON BRUSHES –  WASH - Series 9550 – K9550-50 (1/2”); K9550-75 (3/4”); K-9550-1 (1”); ROUNDS – K-9000 – 14; MAX ROUND – K9020 – 14; ROUND WASH -K9700-26 and sometimes a ONE STROKE – K9100-75 (3/4”)  I use these brushes, but bring what you have.  In the workshop you may try mine to see if you like them before you buy them.  I ALWAYS BRING EXTRA BRUSHES FOR USE BY ARTISTS.
