Program Instructor:
The Baltimore Watercolor Society is excited to feature a two day program with award winning local watercolor artist Luis Pérez.
Program Subject:
Creating realistic textures with watercolor is a very rewarding experience! Luis will share with you his approach, setup and strategy for rendering a variety of textures that are found in portraiture, landscapes, seascapes, botany, animals, etc. He will discuss artistic consistency, drawing, color, color ‘personality’, art materials, references, and tools.
Recommended Experience:
All levels (basic knowledge & some previous experiences strongly recommended to benefit from this workshop)
All levels are welcome but students should have an understanding of the watercolor medium.
Supply List:
Participants should bring their preferred color paints/ palettes, mediums, masking fluid, tapes, small stiff brushes for lifting color, and papers (no bigger than 9" x 12", cold press, 140 lbs or higher recommended).
Additional Supplies
Bring the standard watercolor supplies:
water containers
paper towels or small towel
block or board to attach watercolor paper
Pencils
Masking fluid. Make sure it is still fluid, like the consistency of water.
Rubber cement pick up
Art tape (the white one) OR masking tape
Brush for masking fluid
Small container of dish soap (1 Tablespoon is plenty)
12 inch ruler
Preparation Instructions:
About 30 days before the event, you will receive images from BWS which Luis will use for the class for both days.
On the second day, the participants may use provided references to paint or they may bring their own texture reference to execute (the image should be already drawn/ transferred onto the watercolor paper the evening of the first session).
The references can be:
1) Wood (tree, door, boat, etc.)
2) Snow
3) Metal ( reflective to mat, rust, patina, etc)
4) Food (fruits, salads, etc)
5) Glass
Biography:
Luis F. Pérez was born in Colombia and raised in Bogota and New York, where he graduated from the School of Visual Arts. After working in the fashion industry and community arts programming, he began in 2015 to present his work in outdoor exhibitions. He has won numerous awards, and his work has appeared in various watercolor and drawing publications (Splash 17, 19, 20, 22, 23, 24; The Best of Drawing; Stroke of Genius; Southwest Art Magazine, Artists Magazine: ‘Artist to watch’ 2023).
Luis’s work has evolved from simple graphite illustrations of animals to images on a range of topics and in a variety of mediums and sizes. The common thread in his work is to reinterpret captured light. He generally works from photographs and then reinterprets the photographed subject in a way meant to invite the viewer to focus on light as well as on a subject, prompting the viewer to their own reinterpretation.
His latest watercolors are primarily still life or landscape, generally in large format. The still life paintings of food are a series entitled “Privileged food.” The paintings, while realistic, are contemporary in form, design, and composition. The semi-circular composition offers the opportunity to explore ways that negative space can be complementary or oppositional to the subject, using tonal values, hues, or subtle textural variations.

$150.00 for BWS members (Signature Artists, Associates, and Students) and
$185.00 for non-BWS members.

Please pay online if possible. The payment system allows the use of Credit Cards. Otherwise, checks should be made out to Baltimore Watercolor Society and mailed to Yogini Dahiwadkar at the address below. Please enter the name of the workshop on your check.
Confirmation of your registration will be sent upon receipt of your check or online payment. Checks must be received within 5 days of registration to be considered as registered.

Remember that these workshops fill up very quickly. When filled, you can join the waiting list.
Waiting List:
BWS maintains a workshop and program waiting list. When openings occur, BWS fills the openings from the waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis.
BWS adds names to the waiting list according to the date and time.
You can join the waiting list if a workshop or program is filled. There are often openings, so it is worth doing if you are interested in the class.
You can't join a waiting list before registration opens.
Waiting List registrants - Do not send payment until you are informed of an opening and have been sent an invoice. Any check sent before you have been informed you have a spot will be destroyed.
Cancellations and Refunds:
BWS makes decisions and incurs fixed costs based on the number of initial registrants. Cancellations can affect these costs even if there is a waiting list. In addition, cancellations incur processing fees and other costs paid by BWS as well as requiring extra time and organizational effort. Refunds for extenuating circumstances are at the discretion of the event coordinator.
From registration date to 60 days prior to the event = 90% refund
59 days to 21days prior = 75% refund
20 days to 8 days prior = 50% refund
7 days or fewer = no refund
In the event of inclement weather, the workshop will still be held unless the Hawthorn Center is unable to open or the workshop instructor is unable to travel. If BWS cancels the workshop, then all paid registrants will receive a full pro-rata refund for those days that were cancelled.

Workshop Hours:
Sep 9, 2024- Sept 10, 2024- Hawthorn Center doors open at 9:30 AM to allow you to set up your workspace. Workshop instruction begins: 10:00 AM and end at 4:00 PM.
One-hour break for lunch
Please plan to leave by 4:15 PM. Hawthorne Center closes and doors are locked promptly at 4:30 PM

Wearing Masks

If you feel more comfortable wearing a mask, feel free to do so at any time.

If you are immune compromised and your doctors recommend you only be around people wearing masks, be advised BWS will not be requiring masks for this workshop.
