It’s December and with this special month normally come all the traditions of shopping in decorated, crowded stores, cooking for a big family celebration, and gathering together to worship. But not this year. There should be no crowded venues and if there are, most of us can’t, or shouldn’t, visit them. And we just can’t gather with our loved ones and friends, near or far, for fear of spreading the virus. Everything will be online or Zoom. There are so many people hurting – from loss of friends and family members, loss of their livelihood, maybe even their homes. This is the year that we need each other the most, even if we can’t reach out and physically touch. What can we do to help?

Tuesday, December 1st is “#GivingTuesday," a global day of generosity that was the brainchild of the Belfer Center for Innovation and Social Impact in NYC and has spread across 100 countries – “emphasizing opportunities to give back to our communities and make positive changes in the lives of others." At no time more than now, has this been needed as much. I know that many artists are hurting financially and every little bit donated helps. If possible, find a local charity or non-profit in your area, and give – even if you can’t give money, maybe you can give your (socially distanced) time or lift your voice in support with a word of praise or encouragement. I have always tried to live out my faith bolstered by the belief that it is good “to serve one another humbly in love” and to demonstrate “kindness and goodness." But regardless of differences in beliefs or philosophy of life, we all are affected and must do something to help alleviate the suffering in these desperate times. So let’s resolve that each day, in addition to “Giving Tuesday,” would be a day when we would open our hearts and our hands to those in need around us.

December 1st is also when we start sending out BWS dues renewal notices for the following year. All Associate and Signature Members will receive email invoices for their 2021 dues. Life/Signature Members, however, will receive an e-mail letter. (If you do not have a functioning email, we will send your communication by USPS mail.) If there is an extenuating circumstance, such as job loss or illness etc, where a Signature Artist is unable to pay their dues, they should contact Membership Chair April Rimpo via email at arimpo@amrart.org without delay and we will work with them, in confidence, so that their Signature Artist status doesn’t lapse.

With the January 2021 transition of 18 Signature members to Life status, the number of Life/Signature Artists will make up an amazing 35% of our membership! Even though one of the privileges of Life/Sig membership is that they are not required to pay dues, most continue to donate to help support BWS. This year we have reorganized the Wild Apricot donation page to enable members (and patrons) to more easily designate their choice of donation election, if desired. Following the link in the letter which you received takes you to the page with the choices as well as possible donation amounts.

Donations can be channeled to one of the following selections:

  • Annual MICA Scholarship and Public School Award Fund: “Baltimore Watercolor Society Scholarship” at MICA which awards (currently two) $2500 scholarships to upperclass MICA students using watermedia and (currently two) monetary awards to regional public school students working in watermedia. Both levels are outreaches to young artists to promote painting in watermedia, especially watercolor.
  • Mid-Atlantic Exhibition Awards Fund: used to fund one or more awards given at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Exhibition.
  • Mid-Atlantic Exhibition Memorial or Honor Award Fund: recognizes the memory or work of the person titled in the Award.
  • General Fund: funds used consistent with our status as a 501(c)(3) non-profit for organizational expenses.

We look forward to one day being able to distribute these awards in person at exhibitions and events and sit beside you at workshops and demos. In early 2021 the Strathmore (Signature) and Slayton House (Associate) exhibits will be a little of each, both in person and virtual. Currently Board Members are hard at work organizing programs and other exhibits, some online, others planned for when we will be together again. To this end we are also organizing a Zoom Management Team to assist in the technical support needed for online programs (see newsletter announcement below). Information on everything will be forthcoming as it is confirmed, in the Newsletter and on the Website. But in the meantime, as Hanukkah and Christmas approach I, and all of the BWS Board Members, wish you and your families a very blessed season of peace and health.

Membership Dues and Opportunity to Update Your Interests

If you had not already paid your 2021 dues, you should have received an email with the dues Invoice for either $35 for Signature Artist members or $25 for Associate members. Signature Artists who have achieved the status of Life members also do not receive a dues invoice. 

Life members should have received an email from BWS regarding how to provide a donation, if you should wish to do so.

If we do not have a functioning email for you, then a letter with the dues notice or donation letter were mailed to you via USPS in late November or early December.

BWS runs on a calendar year with membership dues due in January. Anyone who joins BWS in October through December is considered paid in full for 2021, so you will not receive a dues notice this year.

If you plan to pay by check, please follow the link in the email to our Membership Management service so you can update your personal contact information and your interests. After logging in, click on the “view profile” link under your name. Click on the Edit Profile button right under the heading My Profile. Make changes, as needed, and click the Save button at the bottom of the page. You can then logout of the site. It should take only a couple minutes and we very much appreciate your input on programs, workshops, and your volunteer interests.

Forming a Zoom Management Team

BWS is working on plans for some online programs. These programs could include a variety of guest speakers, demonstrations, critique sessions, and more. The BWS Board believes we will need a small set of volunteers who would help us run these events as technical support. The Zoom Management Team will be a volunteer committee under the oversight of a current Board Member, not new positions on the Board.

The Team will determine a Zoom Manager for a particular event. That Zoom Manager may have to create the Zoom event for the meeting. BWS does have a template we have created that may be the best place to start for creating an event. At the time of an event:

  • Log in as a co-Host before the meeting and Launch the Meeting to greet and allow people to enter if they are on the sign up list.

  • Turn on a Recording when the event officially starts,

  • Run any polls that may be needed,

  • Monitor the chat and raise questions when appropriate,

  • Provide Answers to Audience Zoom problems using a Direct Message Chat.

  • End the Recording and store the video in a Private Folder in the BWS Zoom YouTube Account.

Often there will also be an Event Manager who is coordinating the event, providing rules of engagement, answering event related questions, introducing speakers, sharing material with the audience.

Noreen Brunini received an Award of Excellence in the Virginia Watercolor Society's 41st Annual Exhibition for her painting “Shadow Play 2” (below). The Exhibition is at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in Richmond, VA and will run through Dec 31, 2020.

April Rimpo’s watercolor "In Her Own World" was selected by juror Ada Koch for the Prairie Village Arts Council’s State of the Arts 2020, which begins on November 13th online at www.artspv.org.

Elizabeth Burin's painting "Copper Kettles" is currently on view in the Philadelphia Water Color Society's 120th Anniversary International Exhibition of Works on Paper. She has exhibited in many other online shows this year, winning First Place in HelvetArt's “Natural World” online juried exhibition in August.

J. M. Littleton has been awarded the designation "Best Painting & Drawing Teachers in Baltimore 2020" from Expertise.com. Littleton School of Art has received this honor for the third year in a row, in the top 16 out of 149. J. M. has a new website (still under construction) at jmlittletonart.com. Lois Ward Wolford received the Frank Nofer Memorial Award in the 120th Philadelphia Works on Paper Exhibition for her painting “Honey Do List." Her painting "Duty Calls" was selected into the Pennsylvania Watercolor Exhibit and her painting "Morning Routine" was accepted into the Pittsburgh Watercolor Exhibit.

Annie Strack received the First Place Award in the Southern Colorado Watercolor Society Members Exhibit for her painting “Destiny Awaits."

Catherine Hillis was awarded The Ron Schloyer Outstanding Watercolor Award for her painting "Bottoms Up" in the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society's 2020 International Juried Exhibition.
