Juror's Statement by Susan Herron

I am honored to have been chosen as juror for the Baltimore Watercolor Society's exhibit at Glenview Mansion. It was a joy to review these paintings and I was pleased to find so many skilled expressions in watermedia using a variety of subject matter, techniques, and painting surfaces.

When choosing award winners I rely on my first emotional response to a painting. Besides composition, use of value, and shape making, I look for a creative concept and a personal vision. The high quality of work is a testament to the skill and originality of BWS members.

I would have given more awards if I were able. I hope you enjoy this exhibit as much as I did.

First - Rachel Collins, Cabbage Labyrinth
This painting shows an innovative and expert use of color with a composition that I can lose myself in.

Second - Lois Wolford, The Castro
Lois suggested cars and buildings with an economy of masterful brushstrokes.

Third - Leita Gerson, Cats in Space
This painting grabbed me from across the room with it's fanciful design of negative and positive shapes and a gorgeous palette of colors.  I would love to live in her imaginative world for awhile.

Kay Fuller, Jack Harding, and Kathy Daywalt had paintings that excited me with the use of limited palette, strong shapes, and creative concept.

Honorable Mention - Kathy Daywalt, What's Next

Honorable Mention - Jack Harding, Cliff Palace

Honorable Mention - Kay Fuller, Abstract Landscape
